Lawrence, KS Weekend Trip (2003/10/17-19)

Although I live in Kansas for more than seven years, I have never been to the famous Lawrence before. I have two good friends who live there right now and I am on fall recess, so I decided to visit there for the first time.

Day 1Day 2 / Day 3

Day 1: Going to Lawrence

I have talked to friends, one in Topeka, and another in Lawrence to arrange to have dinner together. One of my friend needed grocery from Wichita, so I stopped by a supermarket during my lunch time.

I left my apartment at 3:10pm, I used the Kansas Turnpike from Andover. Arrived Emporia around 4:20pm, I thought I was going a bit too slow so I took appropriate actions to get to Topeka at 5:00pm. I arrived at my friend's apartment in Topeka a little past 5:00pm. We chatted a bit but one of my friends was so hungry, so I decided to go eat. The good thing about my friend's apartment is located near the mall, so there are many places you can go buy stuffs or eat. We went to Olive Garden restaurant, it was only 15 minutes wait so it was good. They had a good salad, but I did not like the bread sticks. (They looked like the ones from Fazouli's) I had a spaghetti. The waitress forgot about our appetizer but I guess it was fine, because we were all full by the time finishing the dinner..

After went back to my friend's apartment, my other friend and I drove up to Lawrence. It was around 7:30pm so we decided to go to Blockbuster Video. We got "Anger Management" and watched.

Went bed around midnight

Day 2: Lawrence Downtown

I woke up around 7:00am. Worked on my paper a bit until my friend wakes up. We had our breakfast around 11:30am at First Watch. Wichita do not have this restaurant so it was nice to try out. My friend told me they get crowded easily on weekends, so it was lucky to wait only for 10 minutes.

The First Watch Restaurant. (Recommended!)

After the branch, we went to the downtown area of Lawrence. It was small district, but there were so many places I can eat or buy stuffs. There was a nice bicycle shop too.

Lawrence's court house. There were some other interesting buildings but this in the only bulding which looked pretty old. According to a source, Lawrence was settled before the Civil War.

While I was walking down a street, I found a funny looking garden in a block of the downtown area.

A garden to present sister city, Hiratsuka, Japan.  http://www.hiratsuka-lawrence.net/

In addition, there are so many J-hawks in the city. I don't know how they are going to protect them in case students from other school going mad after the game... http://www.jayhawkstour.ku.edu/tour.html

Stopped by Half Price Bookstore

It was a game day for the KU so we were quite avnoxious when we thought about the dinner. (And the KU won, too)

Helped wash my friend's car before dinner

Have been to Chipotle We wanted to go to other places but there were so many people and we had to wait. My friend told me that we have this Chipotle in Wichita also. The food costs about $7 including drink so it was a quite good deal.

Rented "Dream Catcher" but the video was the wrong one. I wanted to get the real one!

Day 3: the University of Kansas visit.

Woke up around 7:00pm

Had breakfast at Jimmy John's gourmet sandwiches They say, "Cheap, Fast and reasonably healthy" so I guess it is good enough.

The sign on the window says "Free Smells"

KU campus the University of Kansas

Hilly campus, not like WSU

The famous basketball stadium. You see it on TV all the time!

It's a nice view. I think

World War II memorial. According to my friend, KU students are not supposed to walk under the tower. If you do, you won't graduate.
